H.P. Lovecraft is a seminal horror author. In The Illuminatus! Trilogy, Mavis says he died young, at age 47, because he mentioned the Necronomicon by name in his writings. Most notably, he appears as a character in the novel wherein he allows a meeting with Robert Putney Drake. They discuss the occult nature of his writings, and Drake prods him about his knowledge of the Illuminati only to be disappointed at the lack thereof.
