Abdul Alhazred, called the "mad poet" or the "mad Arab," is listed as the author of the Necronomicon in both the trilogy and in H.P. Lovecraft's original works.
According to a brief biography written about him by Dr. Henry Armitage, he spent seven years in the desert. He claimed he visited Irem, the forbidden city of the Koran. Alhazred claimed the city had a pre-human origin, and was inhabited by Shoggothes. It was said he was an indifferent Muslim, and worshiped the beings Yog-Sothoth (lok-Sotot) and Cthulhu (these are often attributed to H.P. Lovecraft).
